Maris Otter – Test batch Brew Day 7-21-25

So I had some Maris Otter and though lets do a Maris Otter beer with just Maris Otter and lets see what I have for hops in the freezer. I had ChatGTP come up with the hopping schedule based on what I had. Looks like a 1/2 way decent hop schedule based on what I have on hand. Check out the recipe here. I’m only doing a 2.5 gallon batch with this one. Collected the water, added in the salts, and milled the grains the night before and setup the Anvil to start early morning so its ready when I wake up.

Woke up the next morning and added in the grains and started the timer at 05:29. With about 28 minutes left in the mash I gave the grain bed a good stir. I ran the mash to the end as I was a little distracted with work. No biggie, at the end I turned the Anvil up to 167F(75C) to mash out. Pulled the grain basket after sitting at the temperature for a little bit and turned the Anvil up to 212F(100C) and 100% power. Once the grains stopped dripping I pulled them and took a wort sample of 1.039SG

Boil started with the display telling me 208F(97.7C) tossed in the first addition without a hop screen. Not going to hop screen this one. The temperature did make it to 212F(100C) but the boil definitely started around 208F(97.7C). Added in the hops per the schedule. Put in the wort chiller with 15 minutes left and yeast nutrients/Irish Moss with 10 minutes left. @ the end of the boil quickly tossed in the hops shut off the unit and started the chilling water. Pulled a wort sample of 1.044SG. @08:15 was down to 103F(39.4C) much quicker with only about 3 gallons(11.3L) of wort. @08:23 wort was down to 82F(27.7C) and I transferred over to my fermentor and pitched the yeast. Placed in my keezer at 68F(20C). All done and cleaned up by 08:40. Like the small batches.

@18:41 on 7-22-25 I added teh dry hops as the fermentation has slowed down. I just poured them into the top. I’m definitely going to want to cold crash this beer, has a lot of hops lol.

@08:45 on 7-28-25 I transferred the beer to cans after taking a sample of 1.004SG. Got 21 cans out of it and as a nice taste. Can’t wait to see it cold and carbonated.
