Well Christmas has finally come and gone and its time to brew up another beer now that my monthly kit showed up yesterday. Well I started my brew day the night before as I have been doing. I get all the water setup and all my salts put into my Anvil Foundry and setup the timer. This allows me to wake up to my water at temperature, ready to dough in. So this months kit from the HomebrewHappyHour.com is Lord of the ESB from homebrewsupply.com, which is a style I haven’t covered yet in the BJCP guidelines.
So woke up as normal, got my cup of coffee, let the dog out and dough-ed in. Today I get to use a few new items from Christmas. The first is a brew in a bag designed for the Foundry, as I have been greeting great efficiency using a bag and I tried a lot of different ways, more on that in another post. We will see what I get after I sparge. Took a PH reading with 10 minutes left in the mash and I was right at 5.5 which is what my recipe called for. As part of the brew bag I also got some big rubber gloves to help grab the hot bag.
So after the mash was complete pulled bag and yes I squeezed a bit to get the liquid out. I got to say clean up is a little easier with the bag. Well came close to my brew boil gravity of 1.051, I hit 1.047. That is close in my mind plus I got a little more wort then expected. I let it boil for 15 mins before adding in the hops to allow for a little more boil off.
Started the boil and added hops per the schedule. Boil went well. Added Yeast nutrient and Irish moss which wasn’t on the recipe. I forget to add sometime. Chilled and transferred to fermentor. Pitch yeast at 70 degrees and cleaned up.
