HBR – Rathskeller Kolsch

Rathskeller Kolsch

So as this keg is coming to an end I wanted to make sure I took down my notes. Overall I liked this beer. It ended up coming in a little stronger than I wanted it to, it was hard to pound a few. Well lets get down into it.

Ok This is the Boomchugalug.com Rathskeller Kolsch All Grain recipe kit. I just want to note that this is my 5th brew with my Anvil Foundry and I was still figuring out things. Well started off with 5.5 gallons of RV filtered water with a 1//2 campden tablet. Brought system up to 152 degrees and added grains. Held 150 degree’s F for 60 mins with pump running and raked the grain ever 15 minutes, as instructed in the book. Mashed out at 168 for 10 mins. Sparged with 1.5 gallons of water at 175 degrees and collected 6.5 gallons of wort at 1.043 pre-boil. Brought to boil and added hops per schedule and also added Whirlfloc at 10 mins left in boil. Chilled and pitched a 24 hour starter of SO-5 ended up with an OG of 1.047 with an expected gravity of 1.046. Finished out at 1.003.

Appearance wise this is a clear beer with strong golden color. There is a slight biscuit smell on the noise and I’m also picking up a slight citrus smell, which is odd giving the hops. Clean flavored beer with a citrus note and a slight lemony tang at the finish. Overall the beer is a light to med mouth feel.

Overall if I brew this again, I have more knowledge of my system and I’m also using brewing salts so I would like to see how it turns out but, drinkable, enjoyable, give it a 6/10 for me.
