Grocery Store Melomel — UPDATE 3-14-2022

So my Melomel has been fermenting away. Overall the fermentation has been low and slow, which is a little different from what I’m use to. Typically with my home brew beer the fermentation are very quick and very active and this reminds me of someone taking it easy. Its fermenting and the air lock shows it. Below is a link to the brew.

So after a few weeks and a few days, I decided it was time to transfer into secondary as the fermentation has slowed down and yeast is starting to drop out of solution. Cleaned my new vessel and sanitized, transferred over via an auto siphon and capped off with my s style air lock. Of coarse there is a lot more head space then before but there is still fermentation going on which is pushing the o2 right on out.

So with the transferring of the Cherry Melomel and the awaiting to try this I decided, lets keep this train going and while shopping at the grocery store again, I decided lets try this again, Maybe get a continue train of Melomels going, grocery store style. I’m not sure how these taste lol but will ferment a few different ones over the coarse of this next few months and can bring them out at camp for all to try.

So this time I decided to go with a mixed berry. The same manufacture of the juice has a few different flavors so may try and hit all. This round I wanted to see if I could get away with not boiling any water, I really just wanted a down and dirty brew. Cleaned and sanitized my 1 gallon jar, tossed my honey in a hot water bath to allow to flow better, Added in the mixed berry juice, yeast nutrient, and the honey. Topped the jar off with straight RO water and shock the crap out of the jar. Without that hot water from mixing in the yeast nutrient, like I did with the first brew, It was very difficult to get the honey mixed into solution so it was really hard to get a reading. I did end up getting on around 1.100, not sure how accurate it was as mentioned hard to mix up that honey. Next time I will boil and add in the yeast nutrients like I did in the first brew as it all melded together well.

Checked the next day and had activity in the air lock. After a few days you can see the color change. the Cherry Melomel is definitely a nice red color and this Mix Berry Melomel is turning a cool pink.

Stay tuned …………….
